Title: Idaho/Western Wyoming Landcover Classification

Description:
Purpose:
The digital landcover dataset may be used for various purposes with user's discretion. Specifically, this dataset was created for regional terrestrial biodiversity assessment. These data are not intended to be used at scales larger than 1:100,000.
Abstract:
The goal for the Southern Idaho and Western Wyoming vegetation land characterization was to produce a flexible, state wide database meeting the requirements of the GAP program, as well as state and federal land management purposes. It was determined that nine mapping zones would optimize this mapping effort. Mapping zone boundaries were interpreted with on-screen digitizing over the Thematic Mapper (TM) mosaic. Each mapping zone was defined with a .5 kilometer buffer to facilitate edgematching with adjacent mapping zones. TM bands 2-7 and an elevation contour band at 100 foot intervals were used as the source for all mapping zone unsupervised classifications. A maximum likelihood classification algorithm was used in each mapping zone to assign individual pixels to a spectral class. Data recorded at each training site included UTM coordinates determined from a global positioning system (GPS) receiver, vegetation composition, percent cover, soil type, topography, and a qualitative site physical and location description to assist in the location of each site on TM imagery.

Data used to support TM vegetation cover-type modeling included digital elevation data at both 30 meter (1-arc second) and (3-arc second DTED) resolution output to elevation, slope and aspect files, hydrology from USGS 1:100,000 dlg files (including streams and water bodies) and generated from 30 meter pixel DEM's, land use including agriculture and urban areas, and cover-type location polygons generated from literature descriptions, field experience and various localized articles and maps throughout the state.

Process_Step:
Process_Date: 1998
Process_Description:
1) Multiple Landsat 5 TM scenes covered the study area. 2) Landsat scenes were standardized via histogram adjustment and mosaicked. 3) Nine major ecoregions were used to avoid mixing of cover-types with high probablity of spectral signature confusion. 4) Digital classification was peformed on each ecoregion separately. Classification involved: a) Unsupervised spectral clusters using ISODATA algoritm. 100 clusters were used intially to segment the image mosaic, and resulting cluster image was evaluated by examing the average standard deviation for each signature, providing a measure of variablity for the signature. Additional ISODATA cluster images were created using incremtal increases of 25 clusters until a "point of diminishing returns" was reached based on the average standard deviation (variablity) for each signature. 5) Training data obtained from ground data collection and air photo interpretation. Cover-type legend was delineation was base on an attempt to match existing maps in Utah, Nevada and Montana. 6) Modeling was performed on each ecoregion separately and involved two phases: first, statistical association of spectral clusters with cover-type classes, and second, ecological modeling based on ancillary, DEM derived datasets.
