Description:
Purpose:
The digital landcover dataset may be used for various purposes with user's discretion. Specifically, this dataset was created for regional terrestrial biodiversity assessment. These data are not intended to be used at scales larger than 1:100,000.
Abstract:
The goal for the Nevada vegetation cover-type layer was to produce a flexible, state wide database meeting the requirements of the GAP program, as well as state and federal land management purposes. Twenty-two Thematic Mapper (TM) images were required to provide a complete, cloud free mosaic. All base images were geographically registered using 1:24,000 USGS quadrangles or USGS 1:24,000 orthoquads. All base imagery was collected between May and August from 1988 and 1991. Five major ecoregions were defined and used for cover-type modeling. The ecoregions were labeled southern, eastern, northern, central, and western. Criteria for ecoregion definition not only focused on an ecological definition of landscapes and plant biology, but also on avoiding mixing of cover-types with a high probability of spectral signature confusion. Data recorded at each training site included UTM coordinates determined from a global positioning system (GPS) receiver, vegetation composition, percent cover, soil type, topography, and a qualitative site physical and location description to assist in the location of each site on TM imagery.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Five hundred eighty-seven of the 4,413 training sites (13%) were randomly selected and reserved for accuracy assessment. Selection was stratified by cover type for each ecoregion. A target of 15% of cover type sites were reserved, if cover type sample size was above 6. A greater proportion of sites were selected in cover types not digitally modeled, such as agriculture and urban areas. The completed product contained a total of 65 mapped classes, which included canopy categories in the forest and woodland cover types. Accuracy was assessed from two perspectives, model and user accuracy.

Process_Step:
Process_Date: 1995-1997
Process_Description:
1) Twenty-two Landsat 5 TM scenes were geographically registered using 1:24,000 USGS quadrangles or USGS 1:24,000 orthophoto quads. 2) Landsat scenes were standardized via histogram adjustment and mosaicked. 3) Five major ecoregions were used to avoid mixing of cover-types with high probablity of spectral signature confusion. 4) Digital classification was peformed on each ecoregion separately. Classification involved: a) Unsupervised spectral clusters using ISODATA algoritm. 100 clusters were used intially to segment the image mosaic, and resulting cluster image was evaluated by examing the average standard deviation for each signature, providing a measure of variablity for the signature. Additional ISODATA cluster images were created using incremtal increases of 25 clusters until a "point of diminishing returns" was reached based on the average standard deviation (variablity) for each signature. 5) Training data obtained from ground data collection and air photo interpretation. Legend attributes followed UNESCO hierarchical classification system. 6) Modeling was performed on each ecoregion separately and involved two phases: first, statistical association of spectral clusters with cover-type classes, and second, ecological modeling based on ancillary, DEM derived datasets.
