SWReGAP WMS
A Web Map Service (WMS) provides spatial data directly to clients. This means that you can
access our imagery through your own WMS-compliant software rather than through our online
viewers. In fact, you could access data from several services at the same time and overlay
them on top of one another. The URL of our SWReGAP WMS server is:
http://earth.gis.usu.edu/wms/swregap?
Many commercial GIS software packages, such as ArcGIS, can utilize Web Map Services. There
is a list of free WMS clients on our Virtual
Utah WMS Access page.
Directions for accessing the SWReGAP WMS with ArcMap 9.3:
- 1. Open the "Add Data" dialog
- 2. In the "Look in" pulldown menu, choose "GIS Servers" (near the bottom)
- 3. Double-click on "Add WMS Server"
- 4. The URL is http://earth.gis.usu.edu/wms/swregap?
- 5. Click on "Get Layers" to make sure it worked
- 6. Click on OK
- 7. Now you'll be back in the "Add Data" dialog and your new WMS connection will be
highlighted. Click "Add"
- 8. Keep drilling down until you see a list of layers
- 9. Add any layer but "Field sites" (we'll add that later)
- 10. If you want to add more layers, including Field sites:
- 1. Double-click "SWReGAP" in the ArcMap table of contents
- 2. Select the "Layers" tab
- 3. Check the boxes next to the layers you want (if adding Field sites, make sure you
get all of them or they'll disappear as you zoom in and out)
- 4. Click the button in the middle of the dialog with the checkbox on it
- 5. Use the arrow buttons on the right to reorder layers if needed
- 6. Click "OK"
Many of these layers are queryable, including the Field sites layer, which has a URL
attribute that provides much more information about that site.
